Robert Klara Pearls

All of our Tahitian and South Sea pearls are cultured pearls.  95 % of all the pearls on the market, are cultured pearls.  Cultured pearls are ones that humans played a role in their creation. Wild natural pearls are very very rare and have a premium price!

Before we explain how we grade our Tahitian pearls, we want to explain to you, that we don’t select pearls for their value, we select pearls that inspire us, or that we fall in love with.  They don’t need to be perfect, or high in value, they just need to be unique.  Two special pearls make one unique piece in combination with the person who wears it.

Cultured pearls are formed by human intervention using a process called nucleation.  A skilled technician performs a surgical procedure where he makes an incision in the oysters body.  A tiny piece of mantle tissue is taken from the nucleus from another oyster and placed within the original oyster. The mantle tissue cells form a sack that closes around the nucleus of the orginal oyster and start to secret nacre.  The nucleated oysters are then returned to the sea where they can grow, feed, and rest.

It takes more than 4 years, from the birth of the oyster to the harvest of the pearl.  Out of 11.000 oysters collected, 6.000 will reach maturity and will be crafted. After 46 days, due to rejection of the nucleus and predators, only 3600 of the oysters will survive.  After 18 to 24 months of emersion, only 2400 will create a pearl.  For every 100 pearls harvested, only 30 will have a round shape, and only 6% of those 30 will be a grade AAAA.

Pearl Grading for Tahitian Pearls

Grading:

  • A: 70% of the pearl's surface is flawless, with the remaining 30% showing minor imperfections. Deep flaws are absent or minimal, giving these pearls a high luster and appeal.

  • AA: At least 80% of the pearl's surface is flawless, with up to 20% of the surface allowed to show minimal imperfections. Deep imperfections are rare or limited to a very small area of the pearl.

  • AAA: 90% of the pearl's surface is flawless, with the remaining 10% only showing slight imperfections. Deep flaws are almost non-existent, making these pearls nearly perfect. This quality is often offered by leading sellers such as Robert & Klara.

  • AAAA: 95% of the pearl's surface is completely flawless, with the remaining 5% showing barely noticeable imperfections. These pearls are exceptional in quality and rarity, also offered by Robert & Klara.

Pearl Shapes:

Tahitian pearls are known for their unique shapes and the special value attributed to each shape. Round and nearly round pearls are the most valuable due to their rarity. Perfectly round Tahitian pearls are extremely rare, making them highly valuable. However, special baroque shapes, due to their unique appearance, can be particularly sought after for exclusive jewelry pieces.
